Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Refocused, from getting started to advanced features and billing.

Refocused is AI video enhancement software that runs entirely on your own machine. It upscales and restores footage with several model families — from fast, faithful 4× super-resolution to generative diffusion restoration — and also includes frame interpolation for higher frame rates and slow motion, temporal denoising, video depth-map generation, and object masking. Enhancement is only half of it: the Refine workspace lets you fix and composite results after processing.

No. All processing runs locally — models are downloaded, built, and executed on your own hardware (Apple Silicon’s GPU and Neural Engine on macOS, NVIDIA GPUs on Windows). There is no cloud rendering, no uploads, and no render credits or quotas. Your footage never leaves your machine.

Refocused works well with most video content including old footage, compressed videos, screen recordings, and standard definition content. It’s particularly effective at restoring detail in videos that have been compressed or recorded at lower resolutions. Different models suit different sources — the fast Refocus model for reasonably clean footage, and the generative Regenerate models for heavily degraded material.

Input: Refocused decodes through FFmpeg, so nearly any common format works — MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, and many more, including ProRes and 10-bit sources. Output: H.265/H.264 (hardware-accelerated via VideoToolbox on Mac and NVENC on NVIDIA), 10-bit ProRes (4:2:2/4:4:4), VP9, and AV1, in MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, or WebM containers. HDR color metadata (HDR10/PQ, HLG, BT.2020) can be passed through or overridden, and audio is copied across automatically.

Yes. Refocused can write the result as a PNG, JPEG, or TIFF sequence, with 8-bit or 16-bit depth, optional alpha channel, and per-format quality and compression controls.

Processing time depends on video length, input/output resolution, enhancement model, and your hardware. Here are some estimates, based on our testing: M4 Max, 48GB RAM: • FHD output: 3–4 fps • 4K output: 1–2 fps • 8K output: ~0.5 fps
